hat the heck is caddying This was Julissas response to a high school teacher who told her about the WGA Caddie Academy Her top priority at the time was to earn money I saw how hard it was for my parents and I wanted to find a way that I could help pay the bills she says Julissa lives in Chicago with her disabled father who has been homeless at times in the past Her mother and two siblings live in Arkansas Julissas mom struggles with serious health issues and her older sister has cerebral palsy At the WGA Caddie Academy Julissa found more than a job She found a community of likeminded young women determined to succeed Over two summers she mentored many of the new girls offered pep talks and helped with ACT test prep Julissa will soon begin her studies at the University of Illinois pursuing a degree in environmental engineering She has been passionate about the natural world ever since she debated climate change as a member of her high school debate club Now she is excited about being a part of the solution Shes also a huge fan of penguins and wants to help them and other vulnerable species survive I like penguins because they are so determined she says Evans Scholars Alum Anthony Salibas perspective on COMMUNITY Your community is what you make of it Be open to the people who can influence your life and future for the better and then give back to the next generation What goes around comes around Anthony who graduated from Indiana in 1977 is a WGA Director options trading pioneer and tech entrepreneuer W WGA CADDIE ACADEMY BUILDS COMMUNITY The WGA Caddie Academy completed its fifth summer providing 74 high school girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds with the opportunity to caddie and become eligible to apply for the Evans Scholarship The girls caddied daily at clubs along Chicagos North Shore while living at Woodlands Academy in Lake Forest Illinois a new residential location to accommodate the programs rapid growth Since the WGA Caddie Academy launched in 2012 23 participants have been awarded the Evans Scholarship 2016 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT 11
